Gosden adds Utley to World Cup squad

TRAINER John Gosden has added the progressive Utley to his team for World Cup night at Meydan where the three-year-old is in line for a tilt at the $2m Group 2 UAE Derby.

The son of Smart Strike broke his maiden at the second time of asking at Yarmouth last September before going onto mix it at the highest level.

A decent fifth behind Wootton Bassett in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp, Utley was then only beaten just over three lengths into seventh in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf when last seen at Churchill Downs in November.

Utley, who will be making his first start on an artificial surface when he tackles Tapeta in Dubai, worked nicely under Nicky Mackay on Racecourse Side on Wednesday.

Gosden, who got among the winners on World Cup night 12 months ago when Dar Re Mi landed the Dubai Sheema Classic, also has his useful Tazeez earmarked for the Dubai Duty Free.

The trainer said: "Utley seems in good order and looks a suitable type for the UAE Derby. Both he and Tazeez will head out to Dubai about a week before the race."

Inother Dubai news, Sheema Classic-bound Snow Fairy impressed in her final serious home exercise on the Cambridge Road Polytrack on Friday morning.

The Ed Dunlop-trained globetrotter, who was partnered by Adrian McCarthy on this occasion, is set to embark on her latest odyssey on Sunday.
