Meisho Mambo bounces back to capture Oaks

Report: Japan, Sunday

Tokyo: Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) (Grade 1) 1m4f, turf, 3yo fillies

MEISHO MAMBO (Akihiro Iida/Koshiro Take) put a disappointing effort in the Oka Sho (Japanese 1,000 Guineas) behind her to claim victory in her nation's Oaks at Tokyo racecourse on Sunday.

Tenth at Hanshin last month, Meisho Mambo was sent off a 28-1 chance, but travelled smoothly under Take and shot clear in the final two furlongs.

She had enough left to repel the fast-finishing Ever Blossom and give her trainer his biggest success.

Denim And Ruby, the 23-10 favourite, was third with 1,000 Guineas winner Ayusan fourth.

Take, the younger brother of star rider Yutaka, said: "It has been rarer more than ever that I'm riding in Grade 1 races so I'm especially pleased.

"All the staff took care of her very well after the Oka Sho. Her owner [Yoshio Matsumoto] has given me chances every time and I'm very happy to win such big race with his horse."

Last year's Oaks was won by crack filly Gentildonna.
