Iwata eyeing Arc glory with Gentildonna
JOCKEY Yasunari Iwata is preparing for an exciting 2013, with his main focus challenging for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Japan Cup winner Gentildonna.
After landing the Grade 1 Tokyo Daishoten on Roman Legend at Ohi on Saturday, Iwata spoke of challenge for world domination next year as he looked forward to Gentildonna's trip to Paris.
He said: "My 2013 will be the year to challenge the world. I will have a big target with Gentildonna challenging for the Arc."
Already a four-time Grade 1 in her native Japan, Gentildonna would appear to be the perfect candidate for the Arc, having beaten this year's runner-up Orfevre in the Japan Cup.
Second-favourite Roman Legend (Hideaki Fujiwara) took the lead at the top of the stretch in the Tokyo Daishoten, before holding off runner-up Hatano Vainqueur and third-placed Wonder Acute.
Iwata, landing his first victory in the race, added: "My horse held out with guts though he was almost empty before the finish. I want to say thank you to him."
