Big Japanese names throw down gauntlet

Nakayama: St Lite Kinen (Grade 2) 1m3f, turf, 3yo
HOT favourite Fenomeno (Hirofumi Toda/ Masayoshi Ebina), the Japanese Derby runner-up, overcame a slowish start to win this major trial for the Kikka Sho (Japanese St Leger) at Kyoto on October 21.
He hit the front on entering the straight before holding late-running Sky Dignity by a length.
Ebina said: "When I rode him in his work he felt like he had grown up - I hopewe can avenge the spring disgrace!"

Hanshin (Sunday): Rose Stakes (Grade 2) 1m1f, turf, 3yo fillies
Gentildonna (Sei Ishizaka/Yasunari Iwata), winner of both the Japanese 1,000 Guineas and Oaks, is in pole position to complete the fillies' Triple Crown after an emphatic victory in this trial.
The Shuka Sho (fillies' St Leger) takes place at Kyoto on October 14.
