Orpello out to emulate classy Crackerjack King

Preview: Italy, Sunday 4.50pm BST

Capannelle: Premio Presidente della Repubblica GBI Racing (Group 1) 1m2f, turf, 4yo+.

Orpello (Stefano Botti/Fabio Branca) is the likely favourite to beat his eight Italian-trained rivals and give his owner, trainer and jockey back-to-back victories in one of Italy's oldest races, first run in 1879.

Twelve months ago Crackerjack King carried the Scuderia Effevi colours of owner Felice Villa to success in the race after a warm-up win at San Siro and that is the recipe Orpello is attempting to follow.

He slammed Vola E Va (Bruno Grizzetti/Dario Vargiu) by four lengths in a Group 3 last month and there is no reason why the  runner-up or fourth-placed Storming Loose (Bruno Grizzetti/Gregorio Arena) and sixth-placed Pattaya (Botti/Gabriele Bietolini) should overturn the form.

The most intriguing member of the opposition is Orpello's stablemate Vedelago (Mario Esposito), a winner eight times from 11 starts and the best miler in Italy. However, he is trying beyond a mile for the first time and, being by Red Clubs out of a Marju mare, is by no means guaranteed to appreciate the greater test of stamina.
