Sandown to look again on Saturday

SANDOWN has scheduled another inspection for 8am on Saturday before their six-race card, featuring the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle.

Officials checked the track at midday on Thursday due to the threat of frost, but a rise in temperatures on New Year's Day has seen an improvement in conditions.

The track was described as "95 per cent raceable" on Thursday, but plans are in place to put down the frost covers used by Cheltenham as temperatures as low as -4C are forecast on Friday night.

"We will look again on Saturday morning. There has been a big improvement despite the temperature not rising above three degrees yesterday," said clerk of the course Andrew Cooper.

"We have been frost free today and 95 per cent of the track is raceable at present.

Cooper added: “The forecastis for a milder 24 hours with 5C, and we plan to have the course covered during the day.”

Sandown successfully deployed the covers completely for last year’s February meeting so hopes are high.
