Humberto Ascanio: recovering
PICTURE: EquisportsAscanio, 64, took over from Frankel, after whom the unbeaten Sir Henry Cecil-trained star four-year-old is named, after his death from cancer in late 2009.
"He's doing a little better," Ascanio's son Matthew told the Daily Racing Form. "He had a moderate stroke and he's trying to recuperate. He's in the rehab part of it. He's going to have to take some time away.
"Today he was a little better. The right side of his body has slowed him down. He regained feeling in his right arm. It's going to be a process."
Ascanio, who is based in California, sent out the ex-Frankel-trained Fluke to claim an emotional win the Grade 1 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park less than two weeks after the death of his former boss.
His horses have been dispatched to other trainers including Jack Carava, Melody Conlon, Carla Gaines, and Marty Jones.
