Vulcanite beats Salden Licht on chasing debut

Report: Hereford, Wednesday Novices' Chase 2m, 4yo+

VULCANITE recorded a second consecutive win and preserved his 100 per cent record this term as he motored to a good victory over Salden Licht at Hereford.

Both were making their debut over fences and brought with them solid reputations from their hurdling careers.

Vulcanite had finished 10th in the Supreme Novices and fifth in a Grade 2 at Aintree, while Salden Licht came fifth in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham and third in the Grade 1 Aintree Hurdle.

It was Choc Thornton on Salden Licht, having his first run of the season, who made the first move. After making a mess of the fourth last Thornton scrubbed his mount along to move forward and take up the lead.

However, Vulcanite was always well in touch under Tony McCoy and took the final flight with momentum to easily overhaul Salden Licht on the run-in.

McCoy said: "He's got a bit to learn about jumping as he got close to the third last and didn't have a clue what to do. With that in mind he's going to need a bit more practice and the experience will do him good."
