Cause Of Causes scoots to easy Ladbroke win
Report: Ascot, Saturday
The Ladbroke (Listed) 2m, 4yo+
CAUSE OF CAUSES had no problems with the testing ground as he flew up the Ascot straight to break the Irish duck in the Ladbroke.
Only two Irish-trained horses from 16 runners have managed to make the frame in the previous eights runnings of this race but Cause Of Causes ended that run in the best possible style with a clear cut win for trainer Gordon Elliott.
Davy Condon's mount still looked to have plenty to do jumping the final flight but he reeled in those in front of him on the run in to win by four lengths going away.
The race continued to be a graveyard for horses at the head of the market as the winner, the second home Petit Robin and the third Dan Breen were all sent off at 25-1. Double Ross finished fourth at 14-1.
Big field handicaps have proved to be to the liking of Cause Of Causes who finished second in the Galway Hurdle and third in the Racing Post Hurdle so he was not winning out of turn here.
Although those wins came on ground described as soft, conditions at Ascot were a lot more testing, something winning trainer Gordon Elliott thought would play to his runner's strengths.
"We just missed out in the Galway Hurdle and he had a great run in the Racing Post. The ground was a bit looser here which I thought would suit him and he is a grand little horse."
With things not working out as planned recently, Elliott was taking no chances. He continued: "We had three fallers last week and a faller last night at Dundalk on the Flat who we fancied so I relieved when he got over the first couple.
"This horse is not the greatest traveller so we came over a couple of days early. The win is all down top the team at home so I am delighted."
Top-weight Petit Robin did best of Nicky Henderson's four runners in the race with Cash And Go, sent off the 11-2 favourite, unseating Barry Geraghty at the fourth flight of hurdles.
