Trained by Colin Tizzard for Brocade Racing, Golden Chieftain wasn't even the first choice in his own stable with Hey Big Spender going off shorter than the 28-1 winner, who scored by ten lengths.
Favourite Our Mick held every chance but could not get by the winner and held on for second with White Star Line third and Tullamore Dew fourth.
Golden Chieftain was the only ride on the card for 17-year-old Powell, who said: "Throughout the race everything that could go right did. When I looked at the screen on the run in I thought it can't be true - I probably won too easily.
"It is an amazing feeling. He is a classy horse and he made the job very easy for me. It is a dream come true. I came here today grateful for a ride - I never thought I'd ride a winner."
