The Exceed And Excel colt, who runs in the colours of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, displayed a gutsy attitude to land the Group 2 at 9-1.
He denied 3-1 chance Master Of War, whose trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Richard Hughes were seeking a fifth straight Richmond victory.
Third place went to Cay Verde, a 4-1 shot, while 15-8 favourite Ahern failed to fire and never looked like winning.
Johnston's two winners at Goodwood on Wednesday (Hurricane Higgins and Sir Graham Wade) were, like Heavy Metal, ridden by Joe Fanning, who said: "He travelled well and when I asked him to go he was very game.
"I was happy all the way through and he does battle this lad."
