Scalo retired following sesamoid injury
Germany: Leading five-year-old Scalo, one of the best German performers of recent years, has been retired following an injury to his sesamoid.
Although a disappointing favourite in the 2010 German Derby, he was the best German three-year-old of his crop and was voted German Horse of the Year after winning four Group races that season, including the Group 1 Preis von Europa and the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano.
He was trained for these successes by Andreas Wöhler, but had recently moved to Paul Harley after an unsuccessful campaign this autumn in Canada.
He has an excellent pedigree, being the best son of Lando, himself the best son of Acatenango, out of the Exit to Nowhere mare Sky Dancing, and related to numerous top-class performers, including recent Breeders' Cup Mile winner Wise Dan.
He will now be retired to stud, although it is not yet clear where he will stand, or at what fee. Owner Manfred Ostermann said: "He has been one of the very best racehorses I have been privileged to own and we shall definitely support him with many of our best mares."
