Polish Vulcano springs surprise at Baden-Baden

POLISH VULCANO (Hans-Jürgen Gröschel/ Wladimir Panov) pulled off a major surprise on the opening day of Baden-Baden's big meeting when taking the main event by three-quarters of a length, with the next five runners covered by less than half a length.

The strongly fancied Neatico and Petit Chevalier were both held up towards the rear, but when push came to shove Petit Chevalier had nowhere to go, while Neatico, who started at odds-on, found very little.

However Polish Vulcano, sent off at 14-1, had a clear run, leading inside the final furlong and holding on well.

Winning trainer Hans-Jürgen Gröschel said: "He had a bad infection last year, but is now back to form and I always thought he had a race like this in him.

"He will go next for the Preis der Deutschen Einheit at Hoppegarten on October 3".

Andreas Wöhler, whose two runners finished second and fourth, said: "I am satisfied, the trip was too short for Earl of Tinsdal, who now runs in the Preis von Europa."

Andrasch Starke, jockey of beaten favourite Neatico, said: "It was not the extra weight that beat him, he wasn´t himself today and was sweating up at the start, which is unlike him."
