It was previously run as the Aral-Pokal at Gelsenkirchen and more recently the Rheinland-Pokal at Cologne. Whatever the name and the venue, it has always been the first big German test of the three-year-olds against older horses over 1m4f.
That is the case again here, with three four-year-olds pitted against three three-year-olds, two of which ran in the Deutsches Derby. Baltic Rock (John Hillis/Gary Hind) was a close fourth at Hamburg and Feuerblitz (Michael Figge/Andreas Suborics) was tenth at Hamburg after being hampered. He landed the Derby Italiano in May.
The third member of the Classic crop is Irish-bred filly Caitania (Uwe Stoltefuss/Andrasch Starke), who showed improved form when beaten a short head by Salomina, who subsequently won the Germans Oaks, in a Group 3 last time.
Four-year-old Earl Of Tinsdal (Andreas Wohler/Eduardo Pedroza) won last year's race and scored at the highest level this season when winning the Gran Premio di Milano.
Earlier in the season he finished two lengths behind Atempo (Jens Hirschberger/Adrie de Vries) in a Cologne Group 2.
The final contender is the four-year-old filly Temida (Miltsho Mintchev/ Filip Minarik), a Listed winner last time at Hamburg who will need to step up on that form to figure here.
