Berlin set to host first Group 1 contest in July

Germany: Berlin will stage its first Group 1 event in the modern era this year with the Deutschland-Preis moving to Hoppegarten racecourse in July.

The 1m4f contest for three-year-olds and upwards will be held at the Berlin track on Sunday July 24, having been held at Hamburg last term when it was won by Godolphin's Campanologist.

In a sense the race is coming home, as it was run from 1888 to 1944 in Berlin, when it was known as the Grosser Preis von Berlin and, during the Third Reich, the Grosser Preis der Reichshauptstadt. After the war it was run under various names at Düsseldorf before going to Hamburg.

The news is the most significant of several amendments to the German fixture list for 2011 - set to be ratified by the European Pattern Race Committee in Dublin this week.

The late date of Easter has also necessitated some changes, with the Baden-Baden spring meeting, cancelled last year, scheduled for late May/early June.

The Hamburg Derby meeting, held later last year to avoid a clash with the World Cup, is back to its usual date, with the Deutsches Derby on the first Sunday in July.

Baden-Baden´s big summer meeting is at its usual time, but some of the races have been changed around.

The BBAG yearling sales will now be held on Friday all day and Saturday morning with a late start for the Saturday card, which was previously run on Friday. This is to enable the card to be shown live on the French TV racing channel.

Both Hamburg and Baden-Baden will have entire cards shown in France at a time (early evening) to suit the French authorities - a lucrative proposition for the two racecourses, as the French turnover on these races (on which they will receive a commission) is far higher than the domestic turnover.

The Baden-Baden October meeting has been reduced to two days and will be held two weeks earlier then previously, when at least the weather should be more favourable.

However, the sales will be at their usual date as a move to early October would clash with the important yearling sales in Britain and Ireland.
