ALL SHAMAR (Waldemar Hickst/Andrasch Starke) paid a compliment to German Derby favourite Novellist by running away with the Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft at Dortmund on Sunday, winning by three and a half lengths. On his previous start he had finished six lengths behind Novellist at Frankfurt in early May.
The only three-year-old in the field of six, All Shamar tracked front-runner Perfect Son into the straight, took over two furlongs from home and soon had the race in safe keeping.
Odds-on favourite Scalo made up ground from the rear to go second at the distance, but his effort petered out and he weakened again to finish fourth.
For Starke, who completed a four-timer on the day, it was the fifth success in this event in the last seven years.
Trainer Hickst said: "I am very happy with that, we always thought he was smart. He is not in the German Derby, as I think he is better over middle distances, and the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich is likely to be his next race."
Andreas Wöhler, trainer of Scalo, was not too disappointed. "We knew he would need the race after almost a year off, and he was a bit rusty today, but he will come on a lot for that," he said. "He is entered all over, but I am not sure where he will go next."
