Game Ladies Are Forever reclaims Summer Stakes
Report: York, Friday
32Red Summer Stakes (Group 3) 6f, 3yo+
THE first-time blinkered Ladies Are Forever returned to top form and claimed her second victory in the Summer Stakes in the last three years in determined fashion under Graham Lee.
The talented five-year-old, who was sent off at 16-1, forged to the front inside the final furlong to see off last year's winner Gracia Directa and March, who ran on strongly after missing the break.
Favourite Rosdhu Queen, who was unbeaten in four starts during her juvenile campaign, was well below her best and never threatened to play a part. After racing down the stands' side rail throughout, she weakened to finish last.
In contrast, Ladies Are Forever sustained her run on the opposite side of the track to surge past German raider Gracia Directa, who was beaten by a length and a half, to provide Lee with another big-race success following his switch to the Flat last year.
March is perhaps the horse to take out of the contest. The Marco Botti-trained three-year-old was beaten only a neck in Listed company at Sandown last time out, but improved again and would have been much closer had she not fluffed her lines at the start.
The well-backed Body And Soul raced prominently but failed to pick up and could finish only sixth.
