TRAINER Garvan Donnelly enjoyed the first graded winner of his career when Inistioge landed the ITBA EBF Dawn Run Mares' Novices' Chase under a smart ride from Andrew Leigh at Limerick on Sunday.
The 10-3 winner, who runs in the colours of John Mangan, was bounced out in front by Leigh and produced a polished round of jumping from the front.
She set a moderate gallop at first, but, as that pace quickened, many of her rivals were under pressure.
Jumping the final two fences, Inistioge had maintained her lead - and momentum - although 10-1 chance Cara Mara, who was given a cool ride by Robert Moran, looked likely to give her something to think about.
However, after a kick in the belly from Leigh, Inistioge powered away to win by one and three-quarter lengths.
Hello Kitty, an 8-1 shot who raced in midfield for much of the race, claimed third place.
"This race was always the plan - it was tailormade for her," said Donnelly.
"I was happy the ground stayed with a little dig in it and she's an improving mare.
"I don't know where we'll go next with her, but she deserves that as she's been knocking on the door.
"It's my first graded winner and I'm delighted."
