LIGHTENING PEARL, winner of the Group 1 Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket last September, has been retired following disappointing performances on her two starts this season.
Her trainer Ger Lyons believes the filly has failed to train on. He said: "Lightening Pearl has been retired. She is a Group 1 winner and owes us nothing. I'm delighted to have trained her and I hope her progeny are as good.
"She just wasn't firing this year in the way she did last season. She didn't grow over the winter and we've accepted that she hasn't trained on."
The daughter of Marju provided Lyons with his first Group 1 success when landing the Cheveley Park Stakes but finished only 13th in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas before finishing sixth when dropped back to 6f in the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday.
