Franny Norton flies home on Art Scholar at the season's final turf meeting

FRANNY NORTON picked up a winning substitute ride in the Flat turf season's last major contest.

He deputised for the unwell Darryll Holland on 20-1 shot Art Scholar and delivered a well-timed late charge to take the prize, in turn giving local trainer Michael Appleby comfortably the biggest prize of his career.
The Andrew Balding-trained Communicator, 14-1, looked a likely winner half a furlong from home but came up short against the winner, while the Ed Dunlop-trained Voodoo Prince came third at 16-1. Completing the places was 40-1 longshot Samba King.
Appleby said: "I bought this horse at Ascot sales about two years ago for £600. I'd been watching him and I felt he would benefit from a step up in trip.
"He has never stopped improving all season and I think he'll be even better next year. We might even take him to Dubai - we could all do with a holiday!"
Norton subsequently brought down the curtain on the Flat season and brought up his double when he won on Tartiflette in the final race on the card.
