Dettori gave Retrieve every chance with a patient ride but he was simply no match for Novellist from over a furlong out.
The German Derby runner-up drew four-and-a-half lengths clear of Retrieve under a hands-and-heels ride from Pedroza, with Branderburgo a further six lengths back in third.

Mick Channon's front-running filly Sorella Bella finished runner-up in an Italian Group race for the second successive weekend, losing out close home to Punta Stella (Daniele Zarroli/Mario Esposito).
Sorella Bella, who beat all bar Richard Hannon's Law Enforcement in the Group 1 Gran Criterium on her previous start, took the initiative under Martin Harley inside the final quarter-mile.
However, that move failed to crack Punta Bella, who reeled her in throughout the final furlong, leading close home to score by a neck in Italy's top race for juvenile fillies.
San Siro: Premio Omenoni (Group 3) 5f, turf, 3yo+.
Ralph Beckett-trained Pabusar was beaten four-and-a-half lengths in fifth as victory went to warm favourite Noble Hachy (Luigi Riccardi/Cristian Demuro).
The winner is unbeaten in seven Italian starts, the only defeats of her career coming when twice fifth in French Group races.
Noble Hachy had a length to spare over Dagda Mor, with Govinda a further length-and-three-quarters adrift in third.

Douce Vie (Stefano Botti/Fabio Branca) got the better of a trio of German challengers to record a short-head victory over Combat Zone, with Sanjii Danon and King's Hall filling the minor placings.
