Awinnersgame grabs thrilling victory

REPORT: 2-Y-O STAKES, Thursday

AWINNERSGAME and Frankie Dettori edged out favouriteDamien in a thrilling finish to the valuable Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes.

Jeremy Noseda trains the close relation to Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Saoire and had said that the trip of 6½f was likely to be ideal for Saeed Suhail-owned colt.

And so it proved as he collared 11-2 favourite Damien with yards to run after Michael Hills had seemed to snatch the race with less than a furlong to run.

The runners split into two groups as they thundered down the straight course with Brae Hill leading the far side group and Viva Ronaldo taking the majority down the middle.

Hayley Turner on Brae Hill took the overall lead with just over a furlong to run but was passed by Hills who shot clear of the field.
However, Dettori then loomed large on Awinnersgame and eventually overhauled Hills to win at 8-1 by a neck.

Brae Hill stuck on well for third at 25-1 ahead of Cavera who finished fourth for last year's winning trainer Andrew Balding.

Dettori was happy enough to perform a flying dismount on his return to the winner's enclosure and said: "I wasn't confident I would get there but he is hardy, and you only get out of him what you ask.

"He is not an easy ride and you have to have a target to aim at, so I was pleased when Michael went for home first as I then had something to aim at."
