Sandiva strikes in the Prix du Calvados

Report: France, Saturday

Deauville: PMU Prix du Calvados (Group 3) 7f, 2yo

BRITISH-trained horses continued their domination of the Prix du Calvados as Sandiva bounced back to winning ways to score for Richard Fahey under Frankie Dettori.

Sandiva was becoming the third successive horse trained in Britain, and fifth in the last ten years, to land the Group 3 and in doing so saw her Qipco 1,000 Guineas odds cut to 14-1 (from 20) by Paddy Power.

The Footstepsinthesand filly tasted defeat for the only time in four runs when second in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot but she took this comfortably enough despite hanging towards the stands' rail late on.

Settled widest of the field by Dettori in fifth position, Sandiva moved up towards the front runners three furlongs out and then led two from home.

Racing into the final furlong she was clear of her toiling pursuers and, although she lost a couple of lengths when moving towards the rails, there was still daylight between her and Straight Thinking crossing the line who in turn was well clear of the third-place Stormyra.

Fahey said: "She was beaten by a very good filly at Ascot but I just felt she was better today.

"She probably proved it because Frankie said everything went wrong and she still won. She was stuck on the outside without any cover but she's a filly with speed and a bit of class.

"I'll have to speak to the boss - I know he'll be keen to run in the fillies' race on Arc day [Prix Marcel Boussac] but, whether or not she gets a mile, we'll have to see."

Sandiva's task was made easier when leading fancy Lacarolina unseated Gregory Benoist leaving the stalls.
