Rubi Ball tunes up for Pau feature in style

Report: France, Tuesday

Pau: Prix Renaud du Vivier (Listed chase) 2m7f, 5yo+

RUBI BALL (Jacques Ortet/David Cottin) put aside the disappointment of his thirdplace in the Prix Georges Courtois at Auteuil in November with a polished display of jumping at his local course.

A bad mistake at just the second obstacle cost Rubi Ball dear on his last outing, when his near fore shoe was half ripped off and he could only finish third behind Quarouso at the Paris track.

Reunited withregular partner Cottin, the Papot family's seven-year-old was accurate throughout as the pair tracked stablemate Quick Fire, and despite giving away plenty of weight all round was comfortably on top of Miserable at the finish.

"Idon't think [main market rival] Surgeon De Sivola was at 100 per cent today, but then neither were we," said Ortet, who will now aim Rubi Ball at the Grand Prix de Pau on January 22.

The ultimate aim is a return to Auteuil for the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, and Ortet feels his stable star is now better equipped than when finishing second to Mid Dancer last May.

"He's more relaxed at home now, and a more manageable horse," said Ortet.
