Reste Demohasion wins Prix Gaston de Bataille

Report: France, Sunday
Pau: Prix Gaston de Bataille - Grand Cross de Pau (Listed cross- country chase)

NATHALIE DESOUTTER picked her way through a particularly attritional edition of Pau's biggest cross-country prize to score aboard Reste Demohaison for trainer Francois Cottin.

Malberaux's quest for a fifth success in the race ended in fall around 1m from home, in a race where only four horses finished.

Quick Baby stayed on gallantly for second ahead of Star De Livet and Quick Gold.

"I've already tasted success in this race once with Monsieur Peltier and now to win it again with this horse is great," said Desoutter after being smothered in kisses by an emotional winning trainer.

"I'm relieved he avoided all the carnage because he really handles Pau," said Cottin, who was winning a leg of the Crystal Cup for the first time.

Having spent several years in Ireland as assistant to Arthur Moore, Cottin is attracted to the idea of challenging for the pan-European Crystal Cup but, is realistic about the varied challenges each course presents.

"I'd like to try but you must have a very adaptable horse, with all the different tracks like Waregem [in Belgium], Cheltenham and Punchestown," said Cottin. "We'll have to see how Reste Demohaison develops."

Trainer Emmanual Clayeux saddled a big race double as Savigny (Frederic Daviault) won the 2m7f chase for the second year in succession after getting the better of a battle with the gambled-on Argentique.

Clayeux was back on the winners' podium an hour later after Sirene D'Ainay (Jonathan Plouganou) took the Listed Grande Course de Haies de Pau.
