KAUTO SHINY, a daughter of Kauto Star's half-sister Kauto Relstar, became the latest Tom George recruit to score back in her homeland when landing a competitive-looking mares' hurdle at Enghien on Tuesday.
Paddy Brennan settled just better than mid-division early on, but as the race unfolded on the second circuit of the €48,000 contest it became clear that Kauto Shiny was travelling much better than most of her sixteen rivals and the three quarters of a length winning margin somewhat undersold her superiority.
Having driven over from his Gloucestershire base to avoid any possible entanglement with threatened industrial action by air traffic controllers, it might be inferred that George was confident of success.
"Not expectant but hopeful, I think the expression is," George admitted. "Her work's been good and she hadn't actually schooled in France. We've got some French hurdles at home so we've almost cut that stage out now. She's done it very nicely."
Kauto Shiny raced twice for trainer Jehan Bertran de Balanda last year before being sent to George by owner Louise Kemble.
"The targetwill be to get some black type, and as you can tell from her name she's well related," said George.
