Cirrus Des Aigles cruises to first win of 2013

Maisons-Laffitte: La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte (Group 3) 1m2f

AFTER a string of underwhelming performances, Cirrus Des Aigles finally kickstarted his 2013 season with a comfortable victory at Maisons-Laffitte on Friday.

Christophe Soumillon dictated matters from flagfall and it soon became apparent that Cirrus Des Aigles was travelling much better than he had in two recent outings at Deauville.

Soumillon delayed going for everything until well inside the final two furlongs and, despite being strongly challenged by Smoking Sun, the three-time Group 1 winner pulled out plenty in the closing stages.

Paddy Power halved the odds on Cirrus Des Aigles recapturing his Qipco Champion Stakes crown at Ascot on October 19,  shunting the seven-year-old into 7-1 from 14.

"That confirms what he's been showing in the mornings, that he's been getting stronger with each race and in the end he's won well," said trainer Corine Barande-Barbe.

"He'll go to the Dollar as planned and probably the Champion Stakes after that."
