Buick steers Gregorian to Diomed victory
Report: Epsom, Friday
Investec Diomed Stakes (Group 3) 3yo+, 1m½f
GREGORIAN gave William Buick and John Gosden an Oaks day victory as he turned on the boosters to secure an impressive win in the Diomed Stakes.
Off an uneven gallop Buick flicked the switch on Gregorian just over a furlong from home and virtually in the blink of an eye had pulled over two lengths clear.
Penitent charged home late and reduced that lead to one and a half lengths but it was a fine win from four-year-old Gregorian, who was placed in two Group 1 races last year.
"This lad's a good horse, I've loved him from day one," said Buick.
"He's not really had the luck in some of these races but now he's got it together and he'll progress."
Gregorian, cut by Betfred to 25-1 (from 50) for the Queen Anne, became the first favourite to win the race in 11 years after being sent off 3-1 joint-favourite with Producer.
Richard Hughes made his move on Producer some way from home and disputed the lead until the final furlong when Gregorian hung left in front of him and precipitated a move backwards that led to the other joint-favourite finishing fourth.
