AIDAN O'BRIEN, who saddled Ruler Of The World to an impressive success in Thursday's Chester Vase, looks to have another decent Investec Derby contender on his hands in Magician who romped to victory in the Dee Stakes on Friday.

The son of 2001 Epsom hero Galileo was sent off the 13-8 favourite and stormed home under Ryan Moore, slamming 9-4 second-favourite Contributer by four lengths.

Boylesports introduced Magician as a 16-1 chance for the Derby, while Paddy Power went 20-1 (from 33), but were later forced into 14-1. BetVictor clipped him to 16-1 (from 33).

Moore, who partnered Ruler Of The World in the Vase, said of his Dee winner: "He's a nice horse. When you ask him he really quickens well - he's plenty of pace."

Asked to compare the two Chester trial winners, the jockey added: "They are two different types of horses, but they're both good ones."

Kevin Buckley, representing the Coolmore operation, added: "I suppose Ryan was equally impressed with both horses, but he had a nice smile on his face when he came in today.

"He got a good feel for the horse and was impressed when he pushed the button.

"I think on yesterday's evidence and on the pedigree Ruler Of The World is destined for mile-and-a-half races, whereas this fella handled the mile-two there well. He does have a lot of speed on his pedigree."

O'Brien's main Derby contender Battle Of Marengo will run at Leopardstown in Sunday's Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes.

He is 11-2 second favourite behind Dawn Approach for the Epsom Classic, while Mars, sixth for the Ballydoyle-Coolmoore axis in the 2,000 Guineas, could take on Sir Michael Stoute's leading Derby contender Telescope in Thursday's Betfred Dante Stakes at York.

Mars can be backed at 10-1 for the Derby - the same price as Ruler Of The World - while O'Brien is also responsible for Indian Chief and Foundry, 25-1 chances.
