Tir Au But hits the target for Cherel and Gombeau
Report: France, Saturday
Enghien: Grand Steeple-Chase d'Enghien (Group 2 chase) 3m1f, 5yo+
TIR AU BUT (Guy Cherel/Cyrille Gombeau) sprang a major shock in overhauling defending champion Formosa Joana Has to score at odds of 22-1.
The five-year-old son of Trempolino could only finish fifth behind Formosa Joana Has and favourite Pythagore in the the Prix de la Gascogne at the start of the month.
But Cherel's charge left that form behind as he raced clear of his rivals after the last to score by a length, with another five lengths back to Al Bucq in third.
"He's in better form than for his prep run and he's been improving gradually," said Cherel. "He benefitted from the weight allowance for five-year-olds and was given a great ride by Cyrille."
Tir Au But's success is a welcome boost for Cherel, who recently lost the hugely talented Usual Suspects after the Group 1 winner suffered a fatal reaction to anitbiotics.
Pythagore faded to finish eighth after making a mistake at the final ditch, while Remember Rose was pulled up by Nathalie Dessouter after another disappointing performance.
