Return to action looms for Crack Away Jack

EMMA LAVELLE on Thursday reported her stable star Crack Away Jack to be "in great shape" after he appeared among Wednesday's 12 entries for the Grade 1 Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot on January 22.

The Cheltenham Festival winner has not been seen on a racecourse since finishing fourth behind crack chasers Petit Robin and Well Chief  in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton in December 2009, a race inwhich he was found to have sustained a tendon injury.

The 2008 Fred Winter winner returned to training at the beginning of the season and Lavelle has been delighted with his progress.

Quoted in her exclusive blog on, Lavelle said: "He is in great shape and worked well on Wednesday morning, and although in an ideal world I would have started him off in a graduation race, there was not one that really suited so this [the Victor Chandler Chase] could be an option.

"If he is not quite ready in time then I would think that the Game Spirit at Newbury on February 12 will be the alternative."

The 12 entires for the Victor Chandler include dual Champion Chase winner Master Minded and the Nicky Henderson-trained Petit Robin.
