Demuro wins Tenno Sho with late charge

Report: Japan, Sunday

Tokyo: Tenno Sho (Autumn) (Grade 1) 3yo+, 1m2f

MIRCO DEMURO landed an upset as he won the Tenno Sho (Autumn) on board 2010 Japanese Derby winner Eishin Flash (Hideaki Fujiwara) at Tokyo on Sunday.

The 2011 Dubai World Cup winning jockey, who rode 20 winners in Britain this year, took his seventh Japanese Grade 1 victory with a late driving finish on the five-year-old.

Initially settled in mid-division, Eishin Flash's late kick was enough to hold off 12-5f Fenomeno by half a length. The fancied Rulership also came with a late charge to take third.

It was the fourth time Demuro had taken a prize worth over £1,000,000 in Japan, having also won the Japanese Derby in 2003, the Japan Cup in 2008 and Arima Kinen in 2010, the last mentioned victory on board Victoire Pisa, who he would also ride to Dubai World Cup glory the following spring.

Eishin Flash was winless in over two years following his Japanese Derby victory and finished sixth in the Dubai World Cup earlier this year.

The Tenno Sho, a version of which is run in both spring and autumn, means the Emperor's Cup and was attended by the Emperor of Japan for the first time since 2005.
