Ahern, formerly stable jockey to Gerard Butler and Jeremy Noseda but more recently linked to John Dunlop, Brian Meehan and Henry Cecil, is understood to have been arrested in Newmarket following an altercation with his girlfriend, but has not been charged with any offence. The firearm involved is understood to have been a broken air rifle.
Ahern, 32, said in a statement to the Racing Post: "My partner and I had a domestic dispute which resulted in my being held by police overnight. I was released with no charge and this is a
private matter which is now resolved."
A spokesman for Suffolk police said: "I can confirm that a 32-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear. He has been bailed to reattend Bury police station on May 19."
On Thursday, suspension ruled him out of the ride on the Dunlop stable's runaway Craven Stakes winner Elusive Pimpernel, who was partnered by Ryan Moore.
Ahern was back in racecourse action at Doncaster last night, having missed riding work for Cecil on Friday morning and having given up his booked mounts at Kempton that evening.
