LEADING owner Marwan Koukash has diversified his sporting interests with the completion of his takeover of beleaguered Super League club Salford City Reds.

Koukash, who enjoyed his best ever year in 2012 with 101 winners in Britain, announced the deal had been completed on Thursday morning, four days before the club are due back in court in Manchester to face a winding-up petition brought by HM Revenue & Customs and former players Luke Patten and Vinnie Anderson over unpaid bills thought to be in excess of £600,000.

The takeover has been mooted for much of January, and Koukash will get the chance to see his new club in action straight away, as the new Super League season starts on Friday with Salford City Reds at home to Wigan Warriors.

Koukash has pledged to make money available to strengthen the team, who lost their last seven matches of the 2012 Super League campaign.

Koukash said: "This is a very exciting day for Salford City Reds and a momentous day for rugby league. No other club in the sport has the potential of Salford City Reds and I give a firm commitment to do all I can to help realise that potential.

"It will not happen overnight and I urge our fans to be patient as we set out on an amazing journey. My message is that the hard work starts now. I have not purchased Salford City Reds just to save the club, I have done so because I want it to succeed."
