Marcret leads Koukash one-two in Huxley Stakes

Report: Chester, Thursday

Betfair Huxley Stakes (Group 3) 1m2½f, 4yo and up

MARCRET led a one-two for owner Marwan Koukash, with Myplacelater a fast-finishing runner-up in a race that favoured prominently ridden runners.

The 13-2 winner was always close behind front-running 9-4 favourite Questioning and struck for home off the turn. Myplacelater, by contrast, was the only runner to throw down a challenge from off the pace and never looked likely to overhaul the Koukash first-string.

Myplacelater was second at 20-1, beaten half a length. Wigmore Hall, who travelled well behind the leaders but could not go past them in the straight, was another length and a quarter back in third at 15-2. Questioning was fourth.

The Marco Botti-trained Marcret, who had been placed three times in Group races in Italy and Dubai since October, was having his first run in Britain after being purchased by Koukash last week.

Botti said: "He has been consistent. I was concerned about the ground but he seemed to handle it and Ryan [Moore] gave him a good ride."
