Sent off a 22-1 chance, the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained Sunday Times came fast and late under Jamie Spencer to deny Godolphin's Gamilati, who returned at 9-1. Valencha was third at 14-1.

Thought good enough to contest the 1,000 Guineas - when she finished tenth at 100-1 - Sunday Times was second in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes last year, but was last seen finishing well beaten in a Listed race at Warwick in June.

Spencer said: "Peter thought she might just need it - it's her first run back. She had the form and she's come back to it."

Chapple-Hyam, who trains the Holy Roman Emperor filly for Allan Belshaw, added: "I am delighted. The Guineas took everything out of her, she didn't stay and you never have an easy race in the Guineas.

"We turned her out and tried to get her back for the back-end.
"Allan is a sportsman and he will probably want to keep her in training, but she doesn't have much to prove. Seven furlongs is her trip and there aren't many of these around."
