Hogmaneigh edges out River Falcon in photo
REPORT: PORTLAND HANDICAP, Saturday
HOGMANEIGH inched out River Falcon in a photo-finish to win a pulsating renewal of the Portland Handicap for trainer Stuart Williams and rider Saleem Golam.
The two runners passed Siren's Gift entering the final furlong and were matched stride for stride to the line, but it was Hogmaneigh who was ahead when it mattered.
The winner returned at 11-1 with the gallant runner-up, River Falcon, a 14-1 chance. Siren's Gift, a 16-1 shot, finished third and Oldjoesaid fourth, despite missing the break.
The race was a triumph for Racing Post tipster Pricewise, who advised backing both Hogmaneigh and River Falcon in his column.
Winning trainer Stuart Williams said: "He's a very good horse when he is right, but he has had lots of foot problems this year.
"The blacksmith has done an amazing job with him and he wears special shoes that we can only buy in America.
"He was very sore after Epsom and we knew he wasn't100 per centwhen we went for the Great St Wilfrid, but that put him spot on for today.
"Sal (Saleem Golam) gave him a great ride and he's in the Ayr Gold Cup but I don't know if he will go for it with a penalty.
"Saying that, the owners live right next to the course and may want a crack at it."
Stan James go 12-1 from 20-1 about his chances in the Scottish sprint.
