THERE is no Frankel to savour this Flat season but there will be no lack of top-quality runners carrying the pink, green and white livery of owner Khalid Abdullah and Model Pupil was the first to do so as he romped to victory in the first-day feature.

Trained by Charlie Hills, Model Pupil has the best form in the field and proved to be so as he charged to a clear victory under Ryan Moore as the 5-6 favourite.

Model Pupil tracked leader Masterful Act into the straight, Moore shielding his mount from the fierce wind billowing across Town Moor.

Model Pupil and November Handicap winner Art Scholar, who showed no resentment at being flung back into the foul British weather having wintered in Dubai, travelled smoothly as The Bull Hayes hit the front with half a mile to run.

The Bull Hayes kept on gamely in front but he was a sitting duck for the market leader who hit the front with two furlongs to run and went effortlessly clear to claim victory.

Model Pupil was beaten a nose by Mickdaam in last year's Group 3 Chester Vase and Moore said: "He was entitled to win but that was a good start. He travelled okay, it's hard on that ground as they were going in up to their shins."
