Perks 8-1 for Cambridgeshire

REPORT: HIRE FROM HEWDEN CONDITIONS STAKES, Wednesday

PERKS advertised his Cambridgeshire credentials with a smooth victory in the Hire From Hewden Conditions stakes over 1m2½f.

Docofthebay was a non-runner, leaving a field of three for the £20,000 contest. Flying Clarets tookher usual position at the head of affairs as the runners went a steady early gallop.

Paul Hanagan on the leader was soon giving out distress signals as Perks, confidently ridden by Jimmy Quinn, moved into contention two furlongs out.

As Flying Clarets dropped out, it was left to the Godolphin runner, With Interest, to lay down a challenge. The five-year old briefly threatened, but Quinn, partnering the 10-11 favourite, had plenty in reserves and won a shade cosily.

Quinn said: "He won here on softground early in the season and he is different class on this sort of surface.

"He had a couple of bad races on ground that didn't suit, but he quickens on that like it is good ground."

Regarding the Cambridgeshire, he added: "The nine furlongs there would suit him, and the way the weather is going you would take even-money rather than 10-1 about him getting his ground."

Bookmakers were very impressed with John Dunlop's winner and he earned a general quote of 10-1 for the Newmarket contest, although sponsors Totesport make Perks their 8-1 favourite from 12-1.
