Doncaster Racecourse Snow

Doncaster: racecourse covered by three inches of snow

Snow claims fixtures at Doncaster and Newbury

SATURDAY'S turf fixtures at Doncaster and Newbury have been called off due to snow, leaving the additional all-weather card at Southwell as the only meeting to survive the Arctic blast.

The William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster will now be run next Saturday (March 30) after three inches of snow overnight extinguished hopes that the track could beat the weather for a second successive day.

Mark Spincer, managing director at Doncaster, tweeted: "Racing today is abandoned after threes inches of snow and still snowing. We will re-run the card next Saturday with tickets transferred."

Regarding ante-post betting on the Lincoln, Richard Thomas, spokesman for the sponsors, said: "As the race has been reopened to the original entry stage, all ante-post bets struck prior to midday on March  5 will stand.
"All ante-post bets struck on the Lincoln after midday on March 5 are void. All ante-post bets struck on the Spring Mile are void."

Despite passing an inspection first thing, Newbury arranged another check at 10am but decided to abandon just before 8am.

Clerk of the course Richard Osgood: "We came out and walked the course at 5.30am and it was absolutely fine.

"Suddenly it started to come heavier from 6.30am. We've been out three times since then to look at various areas.

"The forecast was nothing like this and the snow is there and the worst thing is it's starting to ball a bit underneath as well."

With Bangor, Kelso, Stratford and Gowran already cancelled, Southwell will now provide the only action, with the four races shown on Channel 4 going off fives minutes later than scheduled.

The course has also had snow overnight but the track has been worked and no problems are anticipated.

If you are planning on going, please remember to ring the track in advance to check ticket availability. The number is 01636 814481.

Sunday's Wincanton card passed an inspection on Saturday morning with no further inspections planned, but Monday's Taunton and Towcester meetings have been lost.
