He needed to be resuscitated twice while being rushed back tohospital after his condition rapidly deteriorated following the incident earlier this month when riding out at a pre-training yard.

Fox, who had his spleen removed in an emergency operation which has left him with 35 staples down the front of his chest and stomach, relived the latest drama in what has been an injury-ravaged career on Sunday while venturing out from his Nottingham home for the first since leaving the Queen's Medical Centre in the city.

The 29-year-old was originally discharged from the same hospital after three days, having been told he had broken between four and six ribs, but events took a turn for the worse the following week when, after calling the emergency services, he was barely conscious by the time an ambulance arrived.

"The doctor had to resuscitate me twice on the way to the hospital, and within 15 minutes of arriving I was in the operating theatre," said Fox. "I had lost two-and-a-half litres of blood, I needed two blood transfusions, and my blood pressure had dropped to 33, but thankfully I am here to tell the tale so the the surgeons did a good job."
