SMART hurdler Bobby Ewing, who was nearing his comeback after a long layoff, died on the gallops on Saturday morning.
The seven-year-old, trained by David Pipe and owned by the Just Good Friends partnership, was last seen on a racecourse in December 2009 when he beat Menorah by ten lengths in a novice hurdle at Doncaster.
He was being readied for a crack at a handicap at the Cheltenham Festival, although he also held entries for the Stan James Champion Hurdle and the Ladbrokes World Hurdle next month.
Pipe said: "It is really sad news. He collapsed and died on the gallops this morning. I have just spoken to the owners, who had been so patient with him, and everyone is very upset. Fortunately his jockey was not hurt but that is the only good news."
Bobby Ewing won two races from three starts under rules.
