Raz lands Munster National for Hughes

Report: Limerick, Sunday

Ladbrokes Munster National Handicap Chase (Grade A) 3m, 4yo+

BRYAN COOPER produced Raz De Maree with a well-timed run, jumping the second last in a line with three others before powering clear to win at 7-1 for Dessie Hughes.

Jumping off in mid-division, Raz De Maree was shuffled back and was nearly in rear with less than a circuit to go. But Cooper nudged and niggled away, cajoling his mount through the field in the back straight.

Entering the home turn the pair were in eighth and working to hold their position with all those in front travelling more comfortably. But one by one, as their rivals came under pressure, they picked them off to be contesting the lead two out.

From there it became something of a procession for the seven-year-old, jumping the last a length clear and extending that margin to six and a half at the line, with Quietly Fancied getting the better of Questions Answered for second.

Hughes said: "I always hoped there was a big handicap in him as he stays so well. He's not big and considering that, he jumps like a natural. We'll look at the likes of the Troytown but anything he runs in with a small weight helps."
