Weld registers landmark 4,000 wins as a trainer

DERMOT WELD registered his 4,000th winner as a trainer when Sea Swift won the concluding fillies' maiden at Naas on Wednesday evening.

Sea Swift, who was ridden by Pat Smullen, was bred by Weld's late mother, Marguerite, something which the trainer said made the landmark victory extra special.

"It's nice to do it with a home-bred filly of my late mother's. We will look for some black type later in the year with her," Weld said to At The Races.

Weld, who has won most of Flat racing's biggest prizes and landed the Investec Derby at Epsom this year for the first time with Harzand, paid tribute to his hard-working staff and the excellent jockeys that he has been associated with down the years.

He said: "I've had a wonderful team of staff through the years, and a lot of hard work has gone in over that time.

"I've been very fortunate to have had some great riders over the years like Wally Swinburn, Johnny Roe, Michael Kinane and Pat Smullen, and Brendan Sheridan in National Hunt."

Great achievement

Weld's achievement is all the more meritorious due to the limited racing programme in Ireland when he first took out a licence to train in 1972.

"For many years there was only racing three days a week on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and sometimes only two days a week. They were six-race cards, and I was lucky enough to have five winners on a day a number of times," the trainer recalled.

Sea Swift completed a double on the card for Weld, who also struck with odds-on favourite Discipline in the Listed Naas Oaks trial.
