Weld Cesarewitch runner Olympiad well supported
OLYMPIAD on Tuesday became the second significant Irish-trained market mover in 48 hours for the Betfred Cesarewitch at Newmarket on Saturday.
After the Maurice Phelan-trained Alhellal had been the subject of strong support on Monday, Olympiad was cut to 8-1 favourite for the 2m2f handicap by Blue Square (from 10), while all the available 12-1 on Tuesday morning disappeared under the weight of support for Dermot Weld's horse.
The trainer had told the Racing Post on Monday that Olympiad was "very well" and an intended runner, though Weld added that he prefers good ground.
Ladbrokes reported on Tuesday evening: "Countrywide Flame is now 8-1 clear favourite for the Cesarewitch on Saturday (from 10s), with money also for Olympiad - into 10s (from 12s)."
Whether the ground will be in Olympiad's favour remains to be seen, with rain not expected until after the declaration stage on Thursday morning.
Michael Prosser, director of racing at Newmarket, said: "We are currently enjoying a beautiful autumnal day and the ground is good to soft, with a GoingStick reading of 6.9
"The forecast is for Wednesday to be dry. It is also predicted to be dry for much of Thursday before a band of rain is anticipated late in the afternoon. That should have gone through by dawn on Friday."
Ladbrokes were not the only firm to report money for Countrywide Flame, with the majority of bookmakers making the John Quinn-trained battler slight favourite ahead of Olympiad and Hurricane Higgins.
Newmarket on Saturday also witnesses two juvenile Group 1s, the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes and Vision.ae Middle Park Stakes, and Guineas favourite Dawn Approach hardened at the head of the betting for the Dewhurst, with BetVictor going 4-7 (from 4-5). The best price available on Tuesday evening was 8-11 with bet365 and Paddy Power.
The sponsor opened betting on the Coral Sprint Trophy at York on Saturday, making Jack Dexter 5-1 favourite.
