Alkasser too classy
in Tetrarch Stakes

Report: Curragh, Monday

Power European Breeders Fund Tetrarch Stakes (Listed) 7f, 3yo

THE Dermot Weld-trained Alkasser, who impressed with an easy win in a maiden last month and is entered in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas later this month, took the step up to Listed level in his stride in Monday's Tetrarch Stakes at the Curragh.

Racing in the colours of Hamdan Al Maktoum, the 10-1 winner came home well to defeat longtime leader Focus On Venice, who returned at 12-1.

The pair were chased home by 20-1 chance Intensical, who, like Focus On Venice, is trained by Jim Bolger.

Great White Eagle fared best of Aidan O'Brien's four runners by finishing fourth, while Boylesports will refund losing singles up to £100/€100 on Gold Peregrine, who unseated Fran Berry leaving the stalls.

Weld will consult with Hamdan Al Maktoum's racing manager, but the Irish 2,000 Guineas is an option for Alkasser.

The trainer, whose only winner of that Classic - Flash Of Steel in 1986 - also won the Tetrarch, said: "He got a nice confident ride from Leigh [Roche]. He did it beautifully and with extreme confidence. I'll speak to Angus Gold but I would say it's quite possible that we might try him in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, it would be the logical thing to do.

"Whether he'll get a mile we'll find out, that would be my concern, but he came home well today."
