Diamond holds on as Hemingway flops

Report: Curragh, Saturday

Gain Irish St Leger Trial Stakes (Group 3) 1m6f

ROYAL DIAMOND showed he is still the one to beat in next month's Irish St Leger, taking the Gain Irish St Leger Trial Stakes as Ernest Hemingway disappointed.

Sent off the odds-on favourite, Ernest Hemingway never responded to Joseph O'Brien's urgings, as Royal Diamond and Voleuse De Couers did battle up the straight.

For a moment it seemed Dermot Weld's four-year-old was gaining the upper hand but Royal Diamond, three years his senior, held on to record yet another big-race success for Johnny Murtagh.
