Costly ban rules Walsh outof Super Saturday

RUBY WALSH, who has had a running battle with the BHA over the new whip rules, was hit with a costly ban for careless riding at Cheltenham on Saturday.

Walsh will miss the richly-endowed new Betfair Super Saturday at Newbury on February 11 and at the moment is ruled out of the Irish Hennessy at Leopardstown the following day.

He also lost the JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial after forcing Pearl Swan home by a short-head from Grumeti, having bumped the runner-up riding with his whip in the wrong left hand as he hung right.

Simon Cowley, stewards' secretary at Cheltenham, confirmed: "As it stands Walsh is banned for February 11, 12 and 13 but as the Irish Hennessy is a Grade 1 he can apply for that day to be deferred under the rules."

Walsh was set to ride Triumph Hurdle winner Zarkandar, the hot favourite for the £152,500 Betfair Hurdle, formerly the Totesport Trophy, and Hold Fast in the Grade 2 Game Spirit Chase.

Walsh's day didn't get any better in the second race on the card, the jockey taking a crashing fall from That'lldoboy.
