Sword Fish romps to Cork National victory

Report: Cork, Sunday

Paddy Power Cork Grand National Handicap Chase (Grade B) 3m4f, 4yo+

SWORD FISH hammered his rivals in comfortable fashion to land the Cork Grand National at odds of 8-1 under the guidance of Ben Dalton, who replaced Alan Crowe.

Held behind the first group throughout the early parts of the race, Sword Fish travelled into the race with ease and hit the front three from home.

The seven-year-old, who was carrying bottom weight of 9st 10lb, cleared the penultimate fence in fantastic style with his jockey still yet to draw the whip before clearing the last and easing to the line to record a ten-length victory over the 4-1 favourite Unoccupied with Another Palm and Rockaboya third anff fourth.

Dalton was fortunate to pick up the ride after Crowe suffered a heavy fall on Thursday and Dalton was full of sympathy for his colleague.

"I feel sorry for Alan Crowe who had a fall the other day and couldn't ride," said Dalton. "He jumped great and travelled great. To win a Cork National is great."
