Favourite Survey edges it in thrilling Guineas trial

Report: Germay, Sunday

Cologne: Karin Baronin von Ullmann - Schwarzgold-Rennen (Group 3) 1m, 3yo fillies

THE top trial for the German 1,000 Guineas ended in a tight finish, with victory going to Survey (Mario Hofer/ Terry Hellier). The narrow 27-10 favourite ranin the colours of Cologne race club president Eckhard Sauren.

The daughter of Big Shuffle made most of the running but the writing appeared to be on the wall at the distance as Paraisa on the inside rail seemed to be going better and llena was finishing strongly from the rear.

But Survey rallied gamely and won by three-quarters of a length over Ilena, who held Paraisa by a nose for second.

Freddie Tylicki's mount Molly Filia ran on to be fourth, a respectable showing after she had played up at the start

However, Tom Queally finished a never-dangerous seventh of eight on long shot Liszar Jo while French challenger Absolutly Me made no show.

Hellier said: "She's very tough. This was her eighth race - she's won three, been second three times and been placed the other two times.

I bought her cheaply at the BBAG yearling sales and later passed her on to Herr Sauren, one of mybest owners. I was confident of a good run, but we were not 100 per cent sure that she would get the trip."

Hellier added: "I did not want to make the running because of the doubts we had regarding her stamina, but the waythe race panned out all went well and she put up a very game performance."

The first three are likely to meet again in the German 1,000 Guineas at Düsseldorf on June 3.
